Support Forum Has Moved

On January 1, 2010, the official support group for Killink CSV Editor is moving to Google Groups. The new URL is:

Why the move? The old forum software I used was becoming a pain to host and keep running. Also, almost all support questions and bug reports I receive come via email and not via the support forum. In other words, the this support forum was rarely used. And frankly I do not like web forums. I prefer email.

Google Groups offers the best of both, web forums for those who prefer it and email for those who rather interact with a community via email. I know the move will be a pain for the select few who use this forum especially if don't already have a Google Account. But the small pain outweighs the benefits of the move.

Also, I hope this move will help the online community to grow. Time will tell if that happens or not.

Feature ideas

We've recently discovered KillinkCSV at my company and are really enjoying using it! So here's my first feature idea...

I know, I'm lazy, but I really like keyboard shortcuts. I'm not seeing a shortcut for closing a file. I open and close a lot of files, very quickly, as I'm doing reviewing test results in csv files. So having to wiggle the mouse over to the "X" takes time.

While closing a file is usually Ctrl-F4, could it also be mapped to Ctrl-W? Ctrl-W is much easier to press.

And for exiting the application, Alt-F4 works, but again, Ctrl-Q is much easier to press.

Killink Running Slow

Im after some help...

We have 2 users who are currently using this software. One of them is working fine and the other after a few weeks is running very slowly. The configuration file slowly grows in size the more he uses it (around 200mb). At the moment, as a temporary fix, I have been copying the configuration file from the other users computer, it them works for another few weeks until the config file has grown high enough to completely slow down the software until its unusable.

Any help would be great.

In a "simple" texteditor like editpadpro, see nothing but ProductId, shown as text, but in the hex display there are the digits EF BB BF. special coding for utf ?

Can't find where it starts, but in some occasions Killink CSV ends cooperation, works very slow esp. with the cell editor ( closing ) .
Perhaps other forum users have the same experience ?

Have had in the past weeks a lot of windows updates, probably a core utility changed.

figurs [3] until [xxxx], the software still works fine !:D

Regarding the few updates and the few forum-topics in 2009, it must be almost perfect :cool:

A few feature requests

I've been playing with Killink CSV for a few days and find it very useful, but there are a couple features I'd like to see in it. I apologize if they've been requested before.

• Shift+Space Bar to highlight an entire row
• Ctrl+Space Bar to highlight an entire column
• Shift-click to highlight multiple cells
• Use of the context-menu key on the keyboard would be nice. I use the keyboard quite a bit and being able to Shift+Space Bar to highlight a row and press the context menu key to bring up the context menu to delete it would be very handy.
• Make the OK button in the Delete dialog a default button. That way I can just hit Enter to delete a row in stead of Tab then Enter.

A couple of nit-picks:

• When you press Ctrl+W on an unsaved file, you are prompted to save and if you do save, the document stays open after saving when it should close.
• When Ctrl+Tabbing to another window, put the focus back into the grid. Otherwise you have to Tab twice to get back into the grid.
• In the Delete dialog, pressing the up and down arrow keys should move focus between the radio buttons in order. As it is now it seems to jump around a bit.

Thanks for a great product! It's saved me a lot of time and beats Excel for a lot of tasks.

Killink CSV Editor is a fantastic editor for sales people. Through the years, I have become disenchanted with fancy spreadsheets, databases, or CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software. Often, these tools are difficult to use, quirky, time consuming, very expensive, incompatible with each other, or simply overkill. One problem that Killink CSV Editor solves is that a spreadsheet may change the actual data within a cell (example: drop leading zeroes on a date or number); Killink CSV Editor does not do this.

For what I do, all I really need is a simple text editor (like Microsoft Notepad) that allows me to quickly enter or search for customer information within a text file. However, one of the problems with a simple text editor is that it is difficult to display CSV (Comma Separated Values) data in a nice format. Killink CSV Editor solves this problem with its beautifully elegant spreadsheet-like display of CSV data.

Another problem with a simple text editor is that it is difficult to sort customer information within the text file, especially when each customer has information that spans many lines. Killink CSV Editor solves this problem with its Cell Editor. The Cell Editor allows customer information that spans many lines to be put into an individual cell in a WYSIWYG (What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get) format.

Here is a simple example of how to use Killink CSV Editor with customer information:

Column A - Call-back Date - in the future (2015-12-31)
Column B - Call-back Priority (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc)
Column C - Status - b (busy signal), na (no answer), ni (not interested), dnc (do not call), cb (call back)
Column D - Customer Name
Column E - Phone Number
Column F - Detailed Customer Information (using the Cell Editor)

To determine what calls need to be made on a given day: Sort by column A, then by column B, then by column C.

Please advise why I can't replace find strings with replace strings.

I am currently using version 1.12 build 195.

In this version it seems to replace the entire contents of a cell with the replace string, rather than just replacing the search string with the replace string.

I have not edited any files for a few months and probably used a different build last time but unless I am going mad it would appear that the find & replace function has changed making the software unusable for the purpose I bought it for.

Window Resize Issue

Question about column based filters, aka excel style

I run a test organization that analyzes large csv files. Having the ability to filter is a key buying point for us.

Sometimes I sort a file by names of cities and then I want to check, how many contacts there are in a special city. Of course I can see the line numbers and calculate, but you now: it is the nature of a programmer to make really nothing by hand :P

I tried the test version, I sorted a file with 10 cols and 80000 lines. Sorting was ok, but undo crashed.

Large CSV Files

I downloded the Trial version of Killink CSV because I'm looking a CSV reader that can read a file up to 3GB of data.

I load my file into the program but nothing happens. There are any limitation in the trial version that I can't see the file? I verified the task manager and still running.

When I tested with small file, the program work fine.

We've got the cell editor, works perfectly with the wordwrap.

But, I know it's a spreadsheet, but sometimes the sheet grows and grows, every time back to the header line and jump to line 400 , isn't that nice. Excel has it's form, not the most splendid way of life, but it works.
Wouldn't it be nice, next to the cell editor, to create a record editor, repeating the columnheader and the proper cells. I know it's easier to ask, than to make. But never asking, is never get ..........

Support for other text delimiters

Hi there, have been using the trial version of your software for a few weeks, and just persuaded my boss to buy it!!
I'm finding it very useful, but there is *one* feature I'd like to request.. I'm using a program called Virtuemart in Joomla (web design content management system) - we have a e-shop, and virtuemart can export our product details to a csv for us. However it uses by default a ^ to delimit fields, and a ~ to delimit the text.
At the moment your program can only use " or ' to delimit text. It would be very useful to choose other characters, such as ~ to do this!

Is merging of cell contents possible?

Can the program merge the contents of two columns in one .csv file named "first name","last name", into one column content for import into another .csv file with only the header, "name"? You have my money, if it can. That is the only function that I cannot find in other programs that do as much, or more, than yours, for free. Sorry! For anybody else, if you don't know about those to which I referred, buy this one. It's actually quite good, or, search long and hard to find the others.:P

Version 1.9.0.172 seems to have a memory leak, when I am trying to open a small file it starts growing (see screenshot). I can send the file by email if you want to do some more research, its too confidentional to put it here on a forum.

Format cells?

Starting with Killink CSV v1.2 add cell values are formatted as text. This is a change from previous versions which used a general format similar to the one found in Excel.

The problem with the general format is that certain values are displayed in a format different then the format used in the actual file. For example, using the general format the value 01970 is displayed as 1970. Notice the leading zero is removed. With a text format the value 01970 is displayed as 01970. Changing to the text format means you will see the value as it is found in the file, which in my opinion is a good thing.

This leads me to the question, do you want the ability to change the format of cells?

I see some advantages to this. For example, by allowing formatting you could easily convert dates from a Month Day Year format to Year Month Day. Is this something Killink CSV users would find useful?

Feature request: Option for NOT normalizing number of delimiters when saving file

I work with delimited files in which lines/records can (and do) have different numbers of delimiters/columns. That is, the file includes different kinds of records in the same file. Some records will have, say, 30 columns, others will have 50, others may even have over 100. (The value of the first column indicates what kind of record it is.)

My problem is that when I edit such a file in Killink CSV and save the file, K.CSV appends delimiters to the end of each line so that all lines have the same number of delimiters. Unfortunately the software I must use to validate these files (which I have no control over) does not ignore extra delimiters at the end of each line. Instead, each line is required to have the correct/expected number of delimiters. In short, K.CSV breaks my files!

Would it be possible to add an option for disabling this behavior?

In "normal" situations one has enough, working in the width of the cell editor.
But I'm working on a series of articles, each can reach an amount of 500 characters or more.

A line with that amount can be handled by the cell editor, but one has to scroll 6 times the monitor to reach the end, what isn't handy to change some characters if needed.
Of course, we have the enter button, or ctrl-enter, in both cases there will be an hex 0A, wich is not automaticly removed after saving.

Solution could be , before displaying to remove this 0A value, but the question is: looking at the windows notepad, to change the cell-editor getting an automaticly new line without a new line character. In other words : give the cell-editor in the "option" box a variable value between a minimum and a maximum, for instance 70 characters, displaying then only ( with wordwrap ) that width of the cell editor.

Would be nice:P

Hello,

I hope that I can mask my frustration and speak clearly and intelligibly.

Ive just downloaded your product, because I will be recieving leads

without commas, and my system does not save text in that fashion, though

I have Vista on a new computer.

I have the platform open, and have the leads saved to Notepad. Upon

looking through the Help tab, and any text I can find....I dont see any

clearly laid out step by step directions for total novices or those who have

never seen this type of product before. I have no idea what terms you are

using mean, and dont see anything like I would understand like,

(1) Click this button, (2) Find your file (3) Save to "Kill" file

Voila! All is loaded.

Do I have to manually load each lead? I have no idea. I cant even guess.

After I am successful at loading my leads into your system, and they are

"Comma Separated", I will then attempt to use a Filler Tool that loads them

into a mailer at a website 10 at a time, and send emails to each lead.

So...my goal is to get my leads into a form that this software needs.

Why there arent directions I can find easily is a mystery to me!

So.....

If there is any Mercy today for me, and my ignorance hasnt totally

made a fool of me, someone please take pity on me and spend a sec

and tell me the obvious.

Oh, and one thing.....when I click "Open" on your software, it opens

a list of my folders....and it lists all the Yellow folders in my computer, but

not the file I have saved. When I go to said folder though on my own,

the file is there!

My frustration with computers has brought me to the brink of throwing

my computer out my window.

Open Files in Less Time using Build 156

Killink CSV 1.8 build 156 was posted over the weekend. There is no new functionality in this release, only bug fixes, which is why there is no official release announcement.

The one bug fix that will interest most is the improved file load. With this release opening a file takes less time. The slow down was caused by the "best fit" feature which was added recently. Thanks goes out to those who reported the slow down.

Column Cut and Paste Issues

First, this is a great tool, I am glad I found it. I edit data quite often, as I work with databases ALOT. I have searched for something more file/data oriented then Excel. The version I downloaded is 1.8.0.154.

But I am running into a few difficulties. When I select a column header, only the first 672 rows are selected. I can see this visually as well as when I paste it into another column in the same file or another file. This is strange, because if I select just the cells, then I can select well over 1000 rows.

Also, when right clicking after selecting a few columns, the selection goes back to one column. That is all that is copied or cut. This does not happen if I use the Edit Menu.

I can work around it, but would hope this wasn't outside of the scope of the product.

Insert Comma and Quotes into CSV

Hi,

We are currently trialing your software to allow us to enter data easily (hence the spreadsheet capabilities) and being able to save the file as a CSV with both commas and quotes around the data.

An example of the input we would enter is as follows:

Column: A B C D
12 13 18

The output of this we would like is a CSV file as follows:

"12","13","","18"

Is this possible with your software at present?

Error message when doing a search

I am now getting an error message each time I do a search. It never has done this before, but does all the time now. My version has been updated to the latest. The error shows EStringListError.

Any ideas?

Select Multiple Rows and columns

I am a website developer who works mainly with ecommerce shopping carts. One of our best selling solutions is a CSV program that imports and exports product and category data. Unfortunately we run into a lot of issues with Excel auto-formatting fields that should be numbers and not handling fields with line breaks in them properly. I have downloaded the trial version of the software and love it and would like to recommend it to customers.

With that said there is one feature I would like to see added. In Excel I have the ability to select a row by clicking on the row number, scroll down to a row further down the page, hold the shift key down, and click the the row number to select the entire range of rows. Also I have the ability in Excel to click on a row and drag the mouse down to select multiple rows. This is the same for columns. If you guys could add this feature it would be great!

Also, do you offer any sort of affiliate sales program if we refer customers to your product?

Printing the Screen View

Dear White Peak team & community,

Am I just blind enough not to find it, or is there any reason why I can't get my killinkCSV to print a csv file just the way it is shown on screen?
What I want to have by doing so is that whenever I hide a column on screen, I don't want printed either.
So... is there a way or at least a workaround for me?

I would hate it if I had to drop KillinkCSV just because of this...

Hi All,

Third time trying this post, ouch, anyway...I am asking if KillinkCSV has the ability to reformat an existing csv file into a csv file that a shopping cart I am working with can understand???

I have a csv file from my supplier with 1700 items, and it needs to be reformatted into a csv format my shopping cart can understand. Why they didn't standardize csv files is beyond me!!!

If it can do it can someone explain how, and if not please let me know what program is available that can.

Support for Tab Seperated files lost in last version.

I just downloaded the latest version (windows installer) and it opened up the last file I had (.tsv ext. - which I registered as Tab Separated- and have confirmed it is still so)

And it put all of the columns in the A cell, and most of the next line in one cell.. Pretty much useless.

I had wanted to use this version to get support for row delete, but it looks like I'll have to roll back to the old version (which was about 3 revisions back)

How to control the quotes during a file save

A new feature added to Killink CSV v1.1 is the ability to control how and when quotes are used to enclose a value. Two options are available:

* Enclose value with quotes when the value contains a NUL character, a quote character, or a delimiter character.
* Enclose value with quotes when the value contains a non-printable character, a space character, a quote character, or a delimiter character.

The second quote option is the default and it is the recommended setting. This will ensure greater compatibility with other CSV applications and parsers.

The new option can be found in the Options dialog (press F8 or select Tools > Options from the menu) under the section titled File Types > Default Settings.
